Core News and Key Facts
Electric scooters are no longer a niche alternative on Indian roads; the latest registration data shows they are becoming a mainstream two-wheeler choice. According to Vahan data, India recorded 15.61 lakh electric two-wheeler registrations between January and September 2026, a 62.3% increase over the corresponding period of 2025. The nine-month total has already crossed the 13.42 lakh units registered during the entire previous year.
The market is being led by four established names: TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp’s Vida. Together, they account for roughly 76% of the segment according to the supplied figures. TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ather Rizta and Vida models are among the products driving the consumer-facing momentum. September alone produced 1.97 lakh electric two-wheeler registrations, highlighting the scale the segment has reached.
Context and Official Statements
The shift is significant because growth is no longer being driven only by new EV specialists. Established two-wheeler manufacturers are increasingly capturing demand with familiar dealer networks, financing options and service infrastructure. In September, TVS registered 51,926 electric two-wheelers for a 26.3% segment share, while Bajaj recorded 46,376 and a 23.5% share.
For buyers, the products now cover a wider price range. TVS currently lists the iQube from ₹95,124 effective ex-showroom, depending on location and applicable incentives, with variants offering 114km to 212km IDC range. Bajaj’s Chetak C2501 starts at ₹95,802 ex-showroom in Bengaluru and offers a claimed 113km range, while the C3001 is listed at ₹1,14,270 with a 131km claimed range.
Krihaa Analysis
The bigger story is not simply that EV sales are rising; it is who is capturing the growth. India’s electric scooter market is beginning to resemble the conventional two-wheeler market, where scale, service reach and consumer familiarity matter almost as much as the vehicle itself.
That changes the buying equation for Hyderabad consumers. A scooter such as the iQube or Chetak is competing not only on range and features but also on whether a customer can easily find a showroom, service centre and financing option. TVS says its iQube network spans more than 2,800 dealers across over 1,000 cities, while Bajaj highlights its expanding Chetak dealership and service network.
There is also a warning against reading the 76% concentration as the end of competition. River Mobility’s reported rise from 1.27% to 2.46% shows smaller manufacturers can still gain ground. Meanwhile, September data shows Ola Electric’s segment share falling to 6.5%, illustrating how quickly the competitive order can change.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: the EV market is moving beyond the question of whether electric scooters will sell. The next battle is over who can combine affordable pricing, dependable range, service access and long-term ownership confidence. That is where the next phase of India’s EV competition will be decided.
