Varanasi Box Office: Can Rajamouli Cross ₹2,000 Crore?

For most films, box office expectations begin after the first weekend. For Varanasi, the conversation has already moved into four-digit territory before the film has even reached theatres. SS Rajamouli’s next film with Mahesh Babu is attracting speculation around a ₹2,000 crore worldwide gross, placing the project in a commercial zone reached by very few Indian films.

Rajamouli’s career provides the context. Student No. 1, Simhadri, Sye, Chatrapathi, Vikramarkudu, Yamadonga and later Eega and Magadheera progressively expanded his theatrical footprint. Baahubali 2 eventually crossed approximately ₹1,810 crore worldwide, while RRR is widely reported at more than ₹1,300 crore globally. These figures explain why Varanasi is being discussed not merely as another major release, but as a potential global-scale theatrical event.

The film stars Mahesh Babu alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Its theatrical release is confirmed for April 7, 2027.

Context and Official Statements

The ₹2,000 crore figure needs to be treated as an expectation or market discussion, not as a guaranteed collection or an officially announced target. There is also no credible pre-release break-even figure publicly established yet, so declaring the film profitable or assigning a required recovery number at this stage would be premature.

The ₹2,000 crore benchmark itself has complicated history. Dangal is commonly reported in the ₹1,968–2,054 crore range, with its extraordinary China run playing a major role. Current published worldwide rankings also show how much the Indian market has changed: Dhurandhar: The Revenge has been reported around ₹1,852 crore, while Baahubali 2 remains around ₹1,810 crore.

Rajamouli has also indicated that substantial production work remained in July 2026, when he said roughly 80 shooting days were pending.

Krihaa Analysis

The real box-office challenge for Varanasi is not simply crossing ₹2,000 crore. It is finding enough revenue outside the traditional Telugu strongholds to make that number realistic.

Baahubali 2 and RRR demonstrated that Rajamouli can turn Telugu cinema into a nationwide theatrical product. Varanasi has an additional advantage: Mahesh Babu brings a large existing fan base, while Priyanka Chopra provides international familiarity. But star recognition alone cannot manufacture a ₹2,000 crore run.

A film reaching that territory needs multiple revenue engines working simultaneously: a huge domestic opening, strong Hindi-market conversion, substantial overseas business and exceptional longevity. More importantly, the film needs to travel beyond fan-driven first-weekend collections and become a title that neutral audiences continue choosing.

That makes the post-release trajectory more important than the opening number. If Varanasi gets strong word of mouth across languages, the ₹2,000 crore conversation becomes commercially meaningful. If the film is heavily front-loaded, even Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s combined scale may not be enough. The record chase, therefore, will ultimately be decided by audience breadth rather than pre-release hype.
