Supreme Court Clears Air on Media Court Reporting

The Supreme Court has clarified that recognised news organisations remain free to report on court proceedings despite its earlier interim order regulating the use of courtroom audio and video recordings. Mohana, stated that the previous order should not be interpreted as a blanket ban on courtroom reporting by the media.

The Court reiterated that the restriction applies only to the extraction, publication, sharing, monetisation or distribution of audio and video recordings of judicial proceedings without prior permission from the Secretary General of the Supreme Court or the concerned High Court Registrar General. It also directed the Union government and High Courts to continue efforts toward implementing live-streaming rules and improving judicial transparency.
