Core News and Key Facts

Range Rover is taking one of its most recognisable performance SUVs into the electric era without giving up the design language that made the Sport name familiar. Jaguar Land Rover has opened bookings in India for the Range Rover Sport Electric, the first fully electric model in the Range Rover Sport lineup. The SUV is expected to arrive in India around March 2027, while its expected pricing is around ₹2.5 crore. Current industry estimates put the likely Indian price range closer to ₹2.56–₹2.66 crore, depending on variant.

The SUV gets a 118.5kWh battery and dual electric motors with all-wheel drive. It produces 550PS and 850Nm of torque, taking it from 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds. The claimed range stands at 609km. The battery is covered by an eight-year or 1.6 lakh-kilometre warranty, according to the supplied launch information.

Context and Official Statements

Charging is one of the key technical highlights. The Range Rover Sport Electric supports up to 350kW DC fast charging, with JLR quoting approximately 22 minutes for a 10-80% charge under suitable conditions. Ten minutes of charging can add up to 220km of claimed range. These figures are important for a luxury SUV because its large battery would otherwise make charging stops a significant part of long-distance travel.

The cabin continues the premium approach of the Sport family, with a 13.1-inch infotainment screen, 13.7-inch driver display, heated and ventilated powered seats, four-zone climate control, wireless phone charging and rear sunblinds. The exterior remains closely related to the existing Range Rover Sport rather than adopting a radically different EV design. The global model is positioned against high-end electric SUVs including the Porsche Cayenne Electric and BMW iX.

For price context, the BMW iX is currently listed around ₹1.40 crore in India, while the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV was last listed around ₹1.41 crore, although the EQE SUV is reported as discontinued in India.

Krihaa Analysis

The interesting part of this launch is that JLR is not trying to make the Range Rover Sport Electric look like a typical EV. That matters because luxury buyers often purchase the identity of a vehicle as much as its powertrain. Keeping the familiar Sport silhouette allows JLR to move existing Range Rover customers toward electric power without forcing them to adopt an entirely new design language.

There is also a practical distinction between the claimed 609km range and real-world ownership. A 118.5kWh battery provides substantial energy capacity, but highway speed, air-conditioning use, temperature and driving style can reduce actual distance. In Hyderabad, where daily urban usage can be relatively predictable, home charging could make the large battery particularly convenient. The bigger question will be long-distance charging availability.

The expected ₹2.5-crore-plus positioning also puts the Sport Electric well above models such as the BMW iX. That means JLR is not competing purely on battery size or range. Its proposition is built around the Range Rover brand, cabin experience, performance, all-wheel drive and the ability to retain the Sport identity while switching to electric propulsion.

For Indian luxury buyers, therefore, this is less about whether an EV can replace an ICE SUV and more about whether electric power can become invisible in the ownership experience. If charging is convenient and the vehicle retains the comfort, performance and road presence expected from a Range Rover, the transition becomes considerably easier.
