The first chapter of one of India’s most familiar stories now has a title designed to make it sound like the beginning of a larger cinematic journey. The much-awaited Ramayana has officially named its first part Rise of a Legend, replacing the working title Ramayana: Part 1.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, the ambitious two-part adaptation stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The new title was unveiled alongside a poster released on Ranbir Kapoor’s birthday, giving audiences a fresh look at the film’s central opposing forces.

The first part is being prepared for a Diwali release.

Context and Official Statements

The makers shared the poster with the caption, “Bringing to life the greatest story in the history of mankind.” The artwork prominently features Ranbir’s Rama and Yash’s Ravana, immediately signalling that the conflict between the two characters will remain central to the film’s visual identity.

Until now, the project was generally referred to as Ramayana: Part 1. The new subtitle, Rise of a Legend, gives the first chapter a distinct identity while also suggesting that the story is being structured as the beginning of a larger character and world-building arc.

The production has attracted attention because of its reported scale and emphasis on visual effects. Rather than relying only on the familiarity of the Ramayana, the film is attempting to present its characters, locations and mythology through a contemporary large-format cinematic treatment.

But the scale of the production also raises expectations. Once a film markets itself through enormous visuals and a globally ambitious presentation, audiences will judge not just the story but whether the filmmaking genuinely earns that scale.
