Google is turning its Pixel Buds from simple playback accessories into devices that can be controlled more naturally through Gemini. The company has started rolling out a Pixel Buds companion app update that adds voice-based controls to the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a.

According to 9to5Google, app version 1.0.981607934 introduces a new setting that allows users to interact with Gemini to control selected earbud functions. Instead of manually opening settings, users can speak commands to change EQ presets, switch active noise cancellation modes, enable conversation detection and modify touch controls.

The interaction appears through the Gemini overlay. After the voice request, users see a “Connecting to Pixel Buds” message followed by visual and spoken confirmation that the requested setting has changed.

Google had promised several Pixel Buds improvements around the launch of its Pixel 11 series. The latest app update appears to deliver part of that commitment, while additional functionality depends on firmware updates.
