Part Timers Review: A Simple Sitcom That Just Works

Not every weekend watch needs a complicated plot, and Part Timers clearly knows that. The JioHotstar Telugu sitcom places two young women with sharply different personalities and family backgrounds in the same apartment, then lets their everyday disagreements drive the comedy.

Teju, played by Gnaneswari Kandregula, is the rebellious daughter of a wealthy businessman. Despite having financial security, she wants to build a life on her own terms and secretly works as a cab driver. Her independent streak, untidy habits and casual attitude become a constant headache for her neighbours.

Sindhu, played by Thanuja Puttaswamy, is almost her opposite. She is a corporate employee, hardworking, organised and ambitious, but lives under the restrictions of her conservative uncle. She moves out partly to escape his attempts to get her married.

The first four episodes build the sitcom around what happens when these two personalities collide. Their initial meeting goes badly, and even after becoming roommates, they struggle to find common ground. Gradually, however, their hostility gives way to mutual acceptance.

Reportedly directed by Sampath Kumar Thota, the series has a runtime of around two hours across four episodes.

The show's premise works because both women ultimately want the same thing: financial independence and the freedom to make their own choices. The contrast lies in how they approach it. Teju already has family wealth but wants independence from her father's influence, while Sindhu is trying to establish independence despite family restrictions.

The humour is strongest when the writing observes these differences rather than forcing jokes. A few workplace one-liners, Teju's father's inflated description of his business achievements and Sindhu's mother's habit of converting every life event into a WhatsApp status provide some of the better comic moments.

However, the show also stretches situations for laughs. Teju's exaggerated behaviour sometimes makes her difficult to relate to, while several neighbour conflicts fail to deliver the intended humour. The music is functional, with Bharath Manchiraju's title track receiving criticism for its casual execution, while Vinod Nekkala's cinematography remains straightforward.

Krihaa Analysis

Part Timers' biggest strength may also be the reason it will struggle to stand out in a crowded OTT comedy space: it asks very little from its audience.

That is not necessarily a criticism. There is a genuine market for shows that can be watched after work without demanding intense concentration. Part Timers fits that space comfortably. Its short episode count, apartment setting and familiar character conflicts make it particularly suited to casual viewing.

But the series stops just short of turning its premise into something sharper. The central idea could have explored an interesting modern contradiction: a wealthy young woman seeking independence for personal reasons versus a working woman fighting for independence because her family wants to decide her future. Instead, the show often settles for easy clashes and exaggerated behaviour.

That leaves Part Timers in an unusual middle ground. It is not compelling enough to demand a binge, but it is also not frustrating enough to abandon immediately. For viewers looking for a low-commitment Telugu comedy, that may actually be enough.

The verdict is simple: watch it when you want something light, not when you are looking for your next must-watch OTT series.
