Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War brings the lesser-told aerial chapter of the 1999 Kargil conflict to viewers through the men of the Indian Air Force’s No. 17 Squadron, known as the Golden Arrows. The six-episode series was released on August 7 and has drawn attention for its emotional portrayal of the pilots who carried out dangerous missions in mountainous terrain.

Ajay Ahuja was the Flight Commander of the Golden Arrows. On May 27, 1999, while flying a MiG-21, he remained in the area while attempting to locate a missing pilot. His aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile and he ejected successfully. Indian authorities later said he survived the ejection but was killed after being captured. His body was returned the following day, and a post-mortem reportedly recorded bullet wounds and other injuries. Pakistan disputed India's account. Ahuja was later awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously.

Dhanoa commanded the Golden Arrows during the conflict and moved the squadron to Srinagar as the fighting intensified. He participated in early missions over areas including Tiger Hill and Tololing and later became Chief of the Air Staff in 2016, retiring in 2019 as Air Chief Marshal.

Dhaliwal had only 46 hours of night-flying experience and had not previously trained for specialised night strikes when he was called upon to undertake them. He completed four operational night missions and received the Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry. He later became a Wing Commander and served with the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team before dying in a 2009 aircraft accident.
