Core News and Key Facts

India’s ODI double-century story has moved into a new phase with Shubman Gill joining Rohit Sharma in a very exclusive statistical club. Gill smashed an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls against West Indies in Guwahati on September 30, 2026, becoming only the second batter in ODI history to score more than one double century. Rohit remains the only player with three ODI scores above 200.

The 223 was also the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Gill reached 200 from just 117 balls, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s previous mark of 126 balls. His first double century came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, when he scored 208. The latest innings therefore made Gill the fifth Indian to cross the 200-run barrier in an ODI.

The complete Indian list begins with Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 200 against South Africa in 2010, followed by Virender Sehwag’s 219 against West Indies in 2011. Rohit then produced 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 208 against Sri Lanka in 2017. Ishan Kishan scored 210 against Bangladesh in 2022.

Context and Official Statements

Gill’s latest achievement came in a remarkable chase. West Indies posted 405/7, their highest ODI total, after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. India responded with 406/2 in only 43.3 overs, winning by eight wickets with 39 balls remaining. Gill’s 223 and Rohit’s 101 formed a 255-run opening partnership, India's highest opening stand against West Indies in ODIs.

Rohit’s century was significant in its own right. His 101 took him to 35 ODI hundreds and beyond 12,000 runs in the format. The match consequently became more than a Gill record: it brought India’s former captain and current captain together in the same opening stand while both crossed three figures.

Krihaa Analysis

The real significance of this list is the changing definition of an Indian ODI batting giant. Tendulkar and Sehwag established the possibility of 200-plus scores, Rohit turned the achievement into a repeatable skill, and Gill is now showing that the same level of scoring can belong to the next generation.

There is also an important difference between Gill’s two double centuries. His 208 against New Zealand came in a conventional high-scoring innings, whereas the 223 against West Indies arrived during a successful chase of 406. That makes the latest performance particularly notable from a match-control perspective: Gill did not merely accumulate runs after India had control; he helped take control of an enormous chase from the beginning.

The bigger question for Indian ODI cricket is whether this becomes the start of a new era of repeat double-century performances. Gill’s arrival alongside Rohit gives India two batters who have already demonstrated that crossing 200 is not necessarily a once-in-a-career event. That changes how future ODI innings can be constructed, especially when aggressive opening partnerships are combined with deep batting resources.
