MRPL Mangaluru Blast: Major Fire, Several Injured at Refinery

A major explosion followed by a fire was reported at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) facility near Jokatte in Mangaluru on Wednesday, September 30, triggering concern among residents in surrounding areas.

The incident occurred around 12.20 pm, with a loud explosion-like sound reportedly heard several kilometres away. Thick smoke was seen rising from the refinery soon after the incident.

Emergency response teams from MRPL rushed to the affected unit, while additional fire engines were called from the New Mangalore Port Authority, Kadri and Pandeshwar. Officials later said that the fire had been brought under control.

One of the seriously injured workers, identified as Rajesh Baptist, suffered burn injuries covering around 35% of his body. He was shifted to Srinivasa Hospital and admitted to the ICU. Doctors said he was out of danger.

Several other people in an adjacent area suffered minor injuries and underwent treatment and medical examinations.

The impact of the explosion was reportedly felt across Jokatte and nearby localities. Residents in areas including Baikampady, Kulai and Kavoor reported hearing the blast, while some people said buildings shook due to the impact.

The Jokatte Gram Panchayat building and nearby houses were also reportedly affected, with damage to some doors and windows.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner HV Darshan, Zilla Panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari and Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy reached the site and supervised the response.

Later reporting citing an MRPL statement said a high-pressure Cold Separator in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit had ruptured, resulting in the fire. The affected unit was isolated as part of the emergency response.

Authorities have urged people not to panic or spread unverified information while the incident and extent of the damage are assessed.
