For LPG subsidy beneficiaries, October 1 is not a deadline to keep a gas connection alive; it is the point at which biometric Aadhaar authentication becomes important for retaining access to subsidised refills at the regulated retail selling price. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that domestic LPG consumers must complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) from October 1, 2026 to book refills with applicable subsidy.

The government says 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, representing 89.9% of the total, had already completed the authentication process as of September 19. Those who have completed it do not need to repeat the process.

For the remaining consumers, the process can be completed in several ways. The delivery person can perform the authentication during cylinder delivery using the Oil Marketing Company’s mobile application. Consumers can also visit their distributor’s showroom or complete the process themselves through the relevant OMC app.

Context and Official Statements

The government says the measure is intended to ensure that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households, while helping identify duplicate or ineligible connections and reducing diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use.

The three major OMCs have provided app-based options: IndianOil customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY. The government has also stated that the authentication process is available to consumers in both urban and rural areas.

There is an important distinction for consumers who do not complete BAA. The government says they can still receive LPG, but they will not receive the subsidy-linked regulated-price refill. Instead, they can opt to receive cylinders at the applicable market price, subject to local availability and the specified cylinder options.

The government has also said that the deadline was extended several times after initially being set for June 30, with the final extension ending on September 14.

The biggest misconception to avoid is treating this as a rule that will stop LPG supply altogether. The government's current clarification draws a sharper line: the connection and LPG supply are not necessarily being cancelled, but the subsidy-linked benefit depends on completing authentication.

That distinction matters because a household could continue receiving a cylinder and still see its effective cost change if it has not completed BAA. In other words, the practical consequence is primarily financial rather than a complete shutdown of LPG access.

There is also a useful consumer-safety angle in the way the process has been designed. People do not necessarily have to make a separate trip to a gas agency. Authentication can be completed during delivery or through the respective oil company's mobile app. That reduces the practical barrier for households that have already been contacted but have not acted.

For consumers, however, the most important step is to use only the official OMC channels or the delivery process described by the government. Aadhaar-related requests create obvious opportunities for fraud, so users should not share OTPs, banking passwords or other sensitive information with unknown callers claiming to “activate” LPG subsidy.

With nearly 90% of active consumers already authenticated, the October 1 change is essentially the final transition from a large-scale verification campaign to a condition attached to subsidised refills. For the remaining households, the issue is no longer simply completing paperwork; it could directly affect how much they pay for their next LPG cylinder.
