A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Flores island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday, August 15, killing at least two people and triggering a brief tsunami warning, according to the US Geological Survey and Indonesian authorities.

The shallow earthquake was centred off the northern coast of Flores, around 68 kilometres northwest of Ende. The initial tremor was followed by several strong aftershocks in the same area, with one reported at magnitude 6.1. Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster agency, said two fatalities had been reported, identifying the victims as a man and a woman. Authorities said the final casualty count and the extent of damage would be confirmed after further assessment.

The tsunami warning was later withdrawn. Authorities subsequently reported waves measuring between 19 and 30 centimetres.

An AFP correspondent reported seeing residents evacuating and the sea apparently receding in the area. A hospital customer service official in the affected region described the shaking as sudden and strong, saying patients fled the hospital and some walls appeared cracked.
