Core News & Key Facts
Charles Schwab has established a technology capability centre in Hyderabad as the U.S.-based financial services company expands its technology and operational presence in India. Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurated the facility on Wednesday.
The Schwab India centre spans 3.45 lakh square feet and will support the company’s U.S. business through technology development, engineering talent and operational capabilities. The company plans to significantly expand its workforce at the Hyderabad facility, with employee numbers expected to rise from the current 200 to around 500 during the first year and reach 2,000 by 2027.
The centre is also expected to support work that is currently outsourced to technology contractors, with select activities planned to transition to Schwab employees based in Hyderabad.
Context & Official Statements
The Hyderabad expansion comes as Telangana seeks to strengthen the city’s position as a major global destination for financial technology and capital markets capabilities.
Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad is increasingly building the technology that powers trading and brokerage operations around the world. According to the Minister, the city now has capabilities spanning wealth and asset management, market infrastructure, artificial intelligence and risk technology.
He described Charles Schwab’s decision to establish the centre as a strong validation of Hyderabad’s financial technology ecosystem. The Minister said Telangana’s ambition is to develop Hyderabad into a global capital markets and wealthtech hub where financial institutions, technology companies, fintech firms, academic institutions and subject-matter experts can collaborate.
The city is home to more than 475 global capability centres, according to the release. It also hosts nine of the world’s top 10 brokerage and trading institutions, collectively representing roughly $40 trillion in assets under management.
Pradeep Menon, Country Head and Managing Director of Schwab India, said the new centre would contribute to Schwab’s technology capabilities for years.
Impact & What to Expect Next
The expansion is expected to strengthen Hyderabad’s role in global financial technology while creating additional technology and engineering opportunities in the city.
Christopher Wyse, Managing Director and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Charles Schwab, said Schwab India would strengthen the company’s ability to serve its 48 million account holders and 30,000 employees who depend on its technology.
The planned increase to 2,000 employees by 2027 represents a substantial expansion from the centre’s current workforce. It also signals a broader shift in Hyderabad’s GCC ecosystem from traditional shared services and support operations toward specialised technology and financial-market capabilities.
For Telangana, the Schwab investment adds to the growing concentration of global financial institutions and technology operations in Hyderabad. The State government is positioning this ecosystem as a foundation for attracting further capital markets, fintech and wealthtech activity to the city.
