Hyderabad’s biggest Ganesh immersion day is being approached as a citywide crowd-management operation rather than a single procession. Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar visited Khairatabad Bada Ganesh and reviewed arrangements ahead of the September 25 Maha Nimajjanam. He said the police had made arrangements to ensure the immersion takes place peacefully and securely.

Around 20,000 police personnel are being deployed across Hyderabad, supported by central forces, traffic personnel, task-force teams and other specialised units. The surveillance network includes more than 10,000 CCTV cameras connected to the Telangana State Police Integrated Command and Control Centre, along with 24 drones and nearly 100 high-rise cameras.

The scale reflects the crowds expected around major immersion points and procession routes. Police have also positioned rescue boats, expert divers, ambulances, fire tenders and emergency teams at strategic locations.

Women’s safety has been given a separate layer of attention. Twenty-six SHE Teams are scheduled to work in three shifts during the celebrations and immersion. Police said these teams have already been active at crowded locations, while additional plainclothes personnel will monitor the final procession to prevent harassment and theft.

The technology network is being used to provide continuous visibility over the procession. CCTV feeds from major routes are connected to the TGICCC, allowing officials to monitor crowd movement centrally. Police have also deployed bomb-detection teams and central forces at sensitive locations.

For residents, the most immediate issue will be mobility. Traffic restrictions for the immersion procession are scheduled to begin from 6 am on September 25 and continue until 10 am on September 26, or until the immersion process is completed. The main route will pass through several parts of the Old City and central Hyderabad before reaching the Hussain Sagar area.

Ten thousand-plus cameras connected to a central command centre mean that crowd movement can be observed across multiple locations rather than relying only on officers stationed at individual junctions.

But technology cannot eliminate the biggest practical challenge for residents: movement through a city that is simultaneously hosting thousands of idols, lakhs of devotees and major road diversions. A camera can identify congestion; it cannot make a closed road available to commuters.

That makes public cooperation a significant part of the security plan. The police deployment is designed to manage the event, but residents can reduce pressure on the system by avoiding procession routes, checking diversion information before leaving and allowing extra travel time. The September 25 holiday declared for Hyderabad and adjoining districts also reduces some routine commuter movement, but major roads will still face festival-related pressure.

The bigger takeaway is that Hyderabad’s Ganesh immersion is increasingly being managed through a combination of manpower, surveillance technology and advance route planning. Whether that translates into a smoother day will ultimately depend on how effectively those systems work together on the ground.
