Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max: 200MP Camera, 6800mAh Battery

Core News and Key Facts

Huawei is turning the smartphone camera into something closer to a standalone photography system with the new Mate 90 Pro Max. Launched in China, the flagship starts at CNY 9,499, which is roughly ₹1.36 lakh before taxes and other market costs. The device combines a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display, a Kirin 9050-series processor and a 6,800mAh battery, but its biggest differentiator is clearly the camera hardware.

The rear setup includes a 50MP RYYB primary camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, optical stabilisation and a continuously variable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture. A 40MP RYYB ultrawide camera accompanies a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor. The telephoto system supports 4x optical zoom, with higher zoom modes designed to retain more detail than conventional digital cropping.

Context and Official Statements

The display is a 6.9-inch panel with 2848×1320 resolution and a 1Hz-120Hz LTPO refresh range. Huawei also claims up to 12,000 nits local peak brightness, while Kunlun Glass is used for protection. The phone carries IP68/IP69 protection and supports features including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and eSIM.

The battery is equally ambitious: 6,800mAh capacity with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging according to the supplied specifications. Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro variant reaches 16GB RAM, while the Mate 90 series runs HarmonyOS 7. Reuters reports that Huawei's new chip architecture is part of the company's continuing push to develop domestic semiconductor technology amid US trade restrictions.

The Collector's Edition goes further with support for Huawei's Ruiying Z10 detachable camera module. It uses a 1-inch sensor and a 24-240mm equivalent range with up to 10x continuous optical zoom. The module itself is priced at CNY 5,999 in China.

Krihaa Analysis

The Mate 90 Pro Max is interesting because Huawei is not merely competing on megapixels; it is testing whether a phone can become the base unit of a modular camera ecosystem. The detachable Z10 module turns the Collector's Edition into something closer to a phone-camera hybrid, potentially appealing to enthusiasts who want serious zoom without carrying a separate camera body.

That positioning also explains why the regular Pro Max and Collector's Edition should not be treated as the same product experience. The ordinary Pro Max already has an unusually ambitious telephoto system, while the detachable module adds a completely different level of optical hardware.

For Indian buyers, there is an important catch: this is currently a China launch, and an India-specific launch has not been confirmed. The converted Chinese price also cannot be treated as an Indian retail price because taxes, duties and distribution costs can change the final figure. At this premium level, buyers in India can already compare it with phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which are established premium options in the market. The Galaxy S26 Ultra, for example, offers a 6.9-inch QHD+ 120Hz display and a 200MP camera system, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains heavily focused on video capabilities.
