Google Tests Flipkart Shopping Through Gemini in India

Online shopping may be moving into a new phase where consumers do not have to leave an AI assistant to complete a purchase. Google is reportedly testing direct Flipkart purchases inside Gemini and AI Mode for selected users in India, bringing product discovery and checkout closer together.

According to TechCrunch, some Flipkart listings shown through Google’s AI interfaces now include a Buy button. After selecting the option, shoppers are reportedly taken into a Flipkart-branded checkout flow, allowing the transaction to be completed without separately opening Flipkart to begin the shopping process.

The trial is currently limited to a small group of users and products. Smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories are among the categories reportedly included. Other users can still see Flipkart products through Google’s AI services but may not have the direct purchase option.

Context and Official Statements

Google has been developing agentic shopping through its Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard designed to allow AI agents to interact with retailers throughout the shopping journey. The company had previously said that eligible products could eventually be purchased through Gemini and AI Mode.

The Flipkart experiment appears to have a different checkout experience because the transaction reportedly carries Flipkart branding. Google has not disclosed the technology powering this specific integration. A Google spokesperson said the company regularly tests features that help users discover and connect with businesses, but did not provide details about the Flipkart trial. Flipkart had not responded to a request for comment when the report was published.

The timing is significant. Wider rollout is reportedly expected in October, ahead of Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale, which opens to all customers on October 9, with early access for eligible users beginning October 8.

A user could ask Gemini to find a phone within a budget, compare specifications and then potentially buy it without switching applications. But convenience also makes transparency more important. Consumers will need to know whether AI recommendations are based on price, availability, relevance or commercial relationships.

Google’s investment in Flipkart also adds another layer. Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 as part of a Walmart-led funding round, giving it a minority stake. That does not by itself explain the current technical integration, but it shows that the two companies already have a financial relationship.

If expanded before the festive season, this could turn India’s biggest shopping period into an important real-world test for AI commerce: whether consumers are willing to let an AI interface move from helping them decide what to buy to actually helping complete the purchase.
