Dhaira Movie Review: Story and Performances

Some thrillers are built around the question of who committed a crime, while Dhaira Movie is more interested in what happens when the people responsible for enforcing the law cross its boundaries. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film revolves around a controversial encounter and the investigation that follows.

DCP Raman Kumar, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, leads a police team that takes suspects for a scene recreation after a serious crime. When the situation turns violent, Raman creates a version of events claiming that the suspects were killed in self-defence. Pressure from the Human Rights Commission eventually leads to a special investigation team headed by DCP Arzoo Kohli, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Prithviraj is one of the film’s strongest elements. He plays Raman as a police officer with his own definition of justice and gives the character the required seriousness. The police-criminal sequences also create some tension, while an emotional sequence involving Kshitee Jog effectively highlights the consequences of police negligence.

Dhaira Movie Review: Where the Thriller Loses Momentum

The central premise gives Dhaira Movie a strong dramatic foundation. The contrast between instant justice and justice delivered through legal procedure is a subject capable of supporting a gripping investigative thriller.

Unfortunately, the screenplay does not exploit that potential consistently. After establishing the encounter and investigation, the film appears to promise a deeper confrontation between Raman and Arzoo. That expected conflict, however, remains surprisingly limited. The two leads do not receive enough substantial combination scenes to build the moral and professional battle at the centre of the story.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s role also needed stronger writing. Despite being positioned as the officer leading the investigation, her character does not receive enough material to create the impact expected from the casting.

The second half becomes increasingly slow, and the final portions do not provide the escalation that the premise demands. The climax is particularly underwhelming, leaving the central ethical question without the dramatic force it could have achieved.

Technically, Saurabh Goswami’s cinematography is effective, while the background score supports the serious tone. Some of the intercut sequences are neatly executed, but the editing could have been tighter.

Krihaa Analysis

Dhaira Movie demonstrates an important difference between having a serious subject and building a serious thriller. The encounter controversy provides immediate stakes, but the film needed opposing characters with equally strong arguments to turn that premise into sustained drama.

The most valuable dramatic possibility was the ideological collision between Raman and Arzoo. Raman represents a form of justice based on immediate action, while Arzoo’s investigation naturally places procedure, accountability and evidence at the centre. That contrast could have driven almost the entire second half. Instead, the screenplay keeps the two characters apart for too long.

This also explains why the film feels longer than its central idea. When a thriller has a morally complicated premise, every major scene should ideally deepen the conflict or change the audience’s understanding of the characters. Dhaira Movie has stretches where neither happens, resulting in a noticeable drop in momentum.

The cast gives the film credibility, but casting two strong performers is not enough when the screenplay does not allow them to challenge each other properly. A tighter narrative and a more confrontational final act could have transformed the same premise into a considerably more engaging thriller.
