A missing-person report was not what first brought Delhi Police to the case; the discovery of a severely decomposed body in an open field triggered the investigation. Police said the remains of a 16-year-old girl were found near Jaipal Rana's field along Kushak Road in the Swaroop Nagar area of northwest Delhi on September 13.

Police allege that the girl was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death by four people, including three juveniles. Investigators said the victim and the accused were known to each other and had been travelling together in a tempo before the alleged crime. Police also said stray dogs had damaged parts of the body after it was abandoned, while one hand was found separated from the remains.

The condition of the body was so advanced that police said its gender could not initially be established. The victim's family had not filed a missing complaint, with relatives reportedly telling investigators that she sometimes left home and returned after several days.

A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. With no apparent eyewitness and the identities of the alleged perpetrators initially unknown, police turned to technical evidence.

More than 50 CCTV cameras covering the suspected crime location and connecting routes were examined. A tempo was spotted near the area around the relevant time, but darkness made its registration number difficult to read. Investigators therefore followed its movement across multiple camera locations rather than relying on a single recording.

During a night-long operation on September 15 and 16, police traced the suspected tempo and questioned its driver. The investigation subsequently led to four apprehensions. The adult accused was identified by police as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu of Khadda Colony. The three juveniles were reported to be aged 16 and 17.

Police said two knives allegedly connected to the crime, clothes allegedly worn by the accused and the tempo were recovered. Officials said forensic and technical evidence is still being examined to establish the sequence of events and the precise role of each person.
