Claude: Chat and Cowork Merge Into One AI Experience

The biggest change in Claude is no longer about what the chatbot can do, but about how much the user has to think before asking it to do something. Anthropic is merging Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into a single conversation, removing the need to select a mode before starting a task. The company says Claude can determine whether a request needs a quick response or more involved tools and agentic capabilities.

In practical terms, a user can ask a simple question in the same conversation where they later request a research report, spreadsheet or presentation. Claude can search the web, work with files, run code and assemble finished outputs without requiring the user to manually divide the assignment into individual steps.

More complex cloud-based tasks can continue after a user leaves the page or closes a laptop. However, tasks requiring access to files or applications on the user's computer still depend on Claude Desktop being open.

The unified experience also extends Claude's connected-app workflow. Anthropic says services such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack can be used during a task, allowing Claude to retrieve relevant information while completing the requested work. Users can also receive finished documents, spreadsheets and presentations and continue refining them in the same conversation.

Several Cowork capabilities remain available. Computer use is offered in beta on Pro and Max, allowing Claude to interact with applications through clicking, typing and navigating the screen. Scheduled tasks can also run recurring work such as reports or summaries.

The rollout is gradual, starting with Pro and Max users across web, desktop and mobile, with more plans expected to follow. Existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts and files are carried over. Once an account receives the new experience, users cannot return to separate Chat and Cowork options.

There are launch limitations, including no GitHub imports, no conversation branching and incomplete search across older Cowork tasks.

Claude is increasingly asking users to skip that translation and simply describe the desired result.

But the convenience also increases the importance of permissions and review. Once an AI can access email, cloud files, websites and computer applications, the cost of an incorrect assumption becomes higher than with a simple text answer. Anthropic itself recommends staying close to tasks involving consequential actions.

So the real test for this unified Claude will not be whether it feels simpler. It will be whether users can trust it to choose the right tools, use connected data appropriately and stop when human approval is genuinely needed.
