Android Makes Password and Passkey Transfers Easier

Changing a password manager has traditionally been the kind of digital housekeeping users postpone because moving dozens or hundreds of credentials can be inconvenient. Android is now trying to remove that friction with a new system-level transfer feature that lets compatible password managers move passwords and passkeys directly between services.

Instead of exporting credentials into a separate file, users can initiate the migration from the password manager they want to switch to. Android then identifies compatible password managers installed on the device and presents them as possible sources. After selecting the existing manager, users are taken back to that app to review and authorise the credentials being transferred.

The system then handles the migration of the selected passwords and passkeys. Google says the process can take only a few seconds, depending on the amount of data being moved.

The change addresses two different problems with older password-transfer methods. Passwords could previously be exported as an unencrypted text file, creating a temporary security risk because sensitive credentials could remain exposed on the device. Passkeys presented another limitation because they could not be transferred through the same process and often had to be registered again on supported websites and apps.

Google’s new system is designed to keep the transfer within Android’s credential-management framework. It also gives users a review step before the migration is authorised, rather than silently moving everything stored by the existing provider.

The feature currently works with Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager and Dashlane. Google says additional password-manager providers are expected to support the system in the future.
